Permanent Vacation - Zuckerhut (John Talabot Remix)

Munich-based label Permanent Vacation has been churning out quality release after release for a while now and much to my surprise, label owners Tom Bioly and Benjamin Frohlich hadn’t actually released anything themselves until last year. Sharing a name with the label, their first 12” 'Tic Toc' was a straight up disco delight featuring label mainstay Kathy Diamond. On the reverse, 'Zuckerhut' was a high tempo Balearic stomper designed for the late night sweaty dance floor. With the label clocking up over 50 releases, it now feels like the time for a reworking of 'Zuckerhut' as a little commemoration. On the flipside of the release, Barcelona mystery man and label mate John Talabot puts his customary shine to polish up the track into a synth heavy house rework. Talabot may try his best to keep a low profile, but after this special remix he may well struggle.

Enjoy.

Ananda Project feat. Marta Gazman – Beautiful Searching (Rasmus Faber Remix)

Some gorgeous house to be found here as Sweden’s Rasmus Faber delivers his remix of Ananda Project’s ‘Beautiful Searching’. There’s an abundance of soul that oozes from every syllable of Gazman’s vocals, set delicately over a soundscape that dips toes into a warm sea of psychedelia. A brilliant headphone track, turn it up and drift away.

Grum - Through The Night (Bitfunk Remix)

Bit Funk is turning out some great remixes at the moment and after this release, some may say there's competition against his originals. Much of the same sentiment can be applied to this remix of Grum's 'Through the Night'. He's twisted and tweaked the bassline and beat giving it a drive and club-friendly lift that the original lacks, with quoted reference too, 'Drive straight through the night/We can make it home before daylight'. The remix retains the uplifting 80's pop-synth while a distorted vocal-chord pulsates in the background - it's an actual pleasure to listen to Bit Funk's best tune to date.

Enjoy!

Treasure Fingers EP - Lift Me & It's Love

Defected deliver more delectable and forward-thinking treats, this time from legend Treasure Fingers. Mr Fingers has gone wild with the vocal chops, which he is well-known for, and brings together tracks that can't be faulted - floating bass lines and gorgeous synth find a way of enforcing their melody into the subconscious. 'Lift Me' purveys that chopped vocal, which doesn't aim to convey any particular message through audible words, but manages to be ridiculously infectious. As the vocal trails, a disco synth hook enters, the kind of thing that files synergistic smiles and foot tapping as a means of celebration. The second track 'It's Love' supplies us with more choppy vocals over a stupidly gorgeous house beat that reflects sounds of old skool. The old skool revival is clearly in place and I'm sure Defected will be there at the forefront, flying their D-branded flag!

Both tracks urge a smile, and that is precious. The video is Defected's promo with a highlight of both tunes.

Do Enjoy :)

Singles Of Note: 4th - 10th October 2010 // Plan B, Boys Noize, Bottin, Tiefschwarz...

A great week has passed for dance music and another one arrives. Enjoy our list of noteable releases this week and do follow us on twitter! We'll love you forever :)

Peace.

Plan B - Recluse (Nero Mix)

When you allow the depths of Nero's remix to infiltrate there them ears, the original just seems inadequate. The original's empty feel, which connotates the solitary feeling of imprisonment, is filled with Nero's dirty and apt bass line as well as that string synth overload. To be fair, there isn't much that has been added - almost as if less is more, but it works. The original seems more in harmony, and not much else happens when the vocal is blaring, but overall it's a banger of a tune well worth some commendation.

Enjoy.

Boys Noize - Yeah

A return to the fray for Alex Ridha, the ubiquitous producer behind Boys Noize and Boys Noize Records. Building from a compressed sequence of chords and a heavy 'doom thunk' bass snare combo, 'Yeah' appears to prematurely tail off into uncertainty, fading in and out, before coming back into focus as Ridha introduces swirling keys gradually and builds the krux of the song around the vocal sample of the title. From this point, the whole song contrives to come together, tighten and become something more concrete and danceable to. I'm grooving as I write this. Distinct from Boys Noize's normal fare is some 90's house influence and a rolling snare drum which evokes my Total Garage 2001 CD, a compilation which has proved to be an invaluable reference over the year.

The whole track is insistent, with its choruses of staccato 'yeah's!' seeming to command people to the dancefloor, albeit a dancefloor situated at my desk. Put simply, I cannot wait to hear this being dropped in a club and wholeheartedly give it a stamp of approval. For me, it retains the key elements of what makes a Boys Noize record great whilst adding a few elements I wouldn't normally associate with Ridha's sound.

Bottin - Discocracy

It's quite surprising to learn that Bottin’s 2009 concept album Horror Disco was the Italian producer’s third album. Cult label Italians Do It Better (IDIB) had obviously listened to feedback for them to release the 12” ‘No Static’ earlier in the year to widespread acclaim. This release gave us an expectation of what to expect from a William Bottin tune; deep synths, a mid-tempo melodic beat and tidy vocal support. For his second release on famed Belgian nu-disco label Eskimo, he doesn’t attempt to deviate from his tried and tested formula. ‘Discocracy’ is a chugging Italo-Disco charmer with those heavy synths and sci-fi melodies to keep the converted happy. It may not hit the heights of his release on IDIB but it’s a welcome addition to his surprisingly extensive back catalogue.

Enjoy.

Tiefschwarz - Stones (Reworked)

Tiefschwarz (and their peers Trentemoller) have always been synonymous with deep house and nowhere are the deep dissonant noises and pulsating rhythms which define this genre more relevant than in their latest offering, 'Stones'. A vocal loop is at the centre of the beat, frantic and insistent - a complete contrast to the slick disco beat, bossa nova cowbell and piano riffs giving the track its Latino backbone. Where many would fail, Tiefschwarz manage to make this unlikely couple work. The song becomes something ehtereal and otherworldly, almost unsettling as the vocal sample claims to be 'trying not to think.... trying to deserve this'. As we would expect with Tiefschwarz (translation: 'deep black'), the song is densely layered and more complex than an average Auto Tuned chart topper. But it's this which draws in the listener - it demands our attention and intelligence. And it's these intellectual demands that make it stand out and evokes some warehouse in Berlin at 5am. Can I get a hell Ja?

Flash Atkins feat Danielle Moore - Make Your Move (Atjazz Remix)

Flash Atkins provides a tantalisingly laid back alternative to the up-tempo, deep house influenced Atjazz remix, opening with smouldering tribal percussion that teases along at a hypnotic 90bpm, before plunging into a deeply soulful groove at 1.44. Featuring the seraphic vocal soundings of Crazy Penis vocalist Danielle Moore, rapturously imploring the listener to make their move with the lights on, the use of live instrumentation and early disco influences coupled with flawless, crystal clear production, make this one hell of a classy, highly seductive track. A nicely interwoven acid bass, subtly entwined amongst the string and brass call and response before the break, adds to the aura of smooth mystique.

Get your groove on.

Voodoo Chilli - Love Song (Urchins Remix)

Featuring a spirited mash up of ‘Everybody’s Singing Love Songs’ by 1970’s Philadelphia soul outfit Sweet Thunder, the Urchins have spliced up the uncharacteristically mellow Voodoo Chilli aka Herve club mix in a bass pounding, noise-gating-aplenty fashion that The Count himself would be proud of. A storming, electro-romp of a remix, let down only by the most overused dance music cliché of our time: if only they could have chosen another sound to replace that white-noise-rise-to-the-next-section-crescendo, which has saturated club track instrumentation for much too long now. It’s time for another noise to keep us in suspense!

Still, enjoy!

Darren Emerson - Decisions

An underground tease is alive in Emerson's production - sounds of percussion build the second crescendo, with added Soulwax-like warehouse atmosphere.

King Midas Sound - Lost(Flying Lotus Remix)

Flying Lotus lends his Midas touch to the King on this lo-fi dub rework. Kitchen sink beats shuffle restlessly around sparse vocal delays, creating the lazy loop style that has become signature to FlyLo's work. Whilst the original track's been stripped of some of its emotion, this mix exposes the rawness and vulnerability of the vocal and pushes it to the fore. Amazing tune.

Enjoy!

Red Rack'em - Pressure (Kez YM Remix)

Nottingham maverick Red Rack’em is well known for his genre busting DJ sets, so it's of no surprise that his latest release ‘Pressure' was a step aside from his usual deep house grooves and disco flavoured edits. By his own admission he wanted to create an ‘old-school banger’ with ties to the ‘straight ahead’ house of the mid 90's. One could argue this is one idea a certain Daniel Plesslow (Motor City Drum Ensemble to you and me) has succeeded with of late with his ‘Raw Cuts’ series. It certainly wasn’t surprising Japanese upstart Kazuki Yamaguchi, better known as Kez YM, was enlisted to take up remixing duties. If ‘Pressure’ was designed for the night time floor, the remix stands (or probably sits) in contrast in the hazy afternoon sunshine. Yamaguchi’s beautiful and deep Detroit-inspired rework drops the intensity of the original to create a late summer groove perfect for those longs days in the sun. That said summer is gone and autumn is certainly upon us now. Turn the patio heaters on and turn up this tune! Close your eyes and you might not be able to tell the difference.

Enjoy.

Jakwob - Here With Me

British dubstep producer and DJ Jakwob, or James Jacob, releases his first single this week, taken from his upcoming debut album. He was shot into our consciousness through heavy remixes of Ellie Goulding's 'Under The Sheets' and 'Starry Eyed', and has since remixed the likes of Katie Melua, M.I.A and Temper Trap. This single, released on an EP with accompanying track synonymous with his sound 'Scare The Snare', is a chilled version of himself. It's interesting production, soothing vocal screaming, atmospheric strings and cheeky use of instrumentation combines to form a harrowing narrative with a happy ending. Enjoy!

Ahu - To:Love

This is almost a meditative release, which transcends through the final product, through the vocal and through the lyrics - It's a downtempo soul song with a simplicity that arouses complexities. It's not the most chirpy of songs admittedly, but there is light at the end of a relationship-ending tunnel, where calmness ensues. A fantastic remix by Dimlite backs up this release of fascinating Turkish singer Ahu. One to watch (type her name into Google and she's being watched by the blogosphere!) Enjoy. Erol Alkan and Gonzalez - Never Stop

Where has Erol been all our lives? Well, off around the world doing live tours and spreading his dirty love. Through music, may we add. Ahem. He teams up with Chilly Gonzalez to provide a return to Erol's sound and a tune sure to find it's way on to the late night dancefloor near you. It's a rework of Gonzalez's April release and adds an oomph that tickles the stomach. Enjoy.

The first track today is by Bristolian TecBloc who shows us a darker side to the future of grime/dubstep. The stirring intro spans a deep and dark minute, complemented by a broken and choppy vocal, until the drop throws you in to a strong dubstep beat - oscillating synth and bleepy noises shape a garage-sound of the future. Singles (Of Note) Round Up: 26th - 1st August 2010

It's time for the weekly round up of noteable tune releases. Quite a big week - we got house, uk funky, drum and bass and a bit of soul. Plus, newsicmoos has some new writers on board so keep an eye out for them! And may this atrocity never ever happen again.

So the festival season is underway, if you have any crazy stories or general chit chat get in touch! newsicmoos@yahoo.co.uk. Follow us on Twitter! Check out Zed Bias and his latest soulful delivery as the Tune Of The Week. That's enough plugging this week.

Chris Lake & Nelski - Minimal Life

Chris Lake is no stranger to big room electro stompers, but for his latest release 'Minimal Feelings' he delves in to the murky world of minimal. Alongside the 'Rising Music' head honcho is Nelski who until late 2008 was one part of Rhythm Code, a production duo that released tech house gems on Size, Cubism, Rising Music and Noir. Together the pair have created a dance floor destroyer, peppered with acid squelch, bleeps, bloops and hover sounds. These sounds constantly change and crisscross around the track to give it a classic minimal feel. Lake's big room electro past can be heard as the track slowly builds to a huge drop and slams you back in to nothing but beats, bass and bleeps. This track isn't for the experienced minimalist but rather a perfect crossover for all those electro heads that have never ventured into the world of minimal. Now, they may look no further.

Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill

'On Melancholy Hill' is the second release from album Plastic Beach, following 'Stylo', the pop-enthused tune that introduced the newly progressed sound of the musical project since the over-hyped Demon Days. Damon Albarn's geniality is proved in this beautifully romantic and dreamy pop song, and quite the opposite to the title, it evokes a sense of serenity and solace. A balance is found in the up-beat riff and chilled out lyrics, creating a comforting love song. Lyrics allude to the question of love and that connection with a loved on. On a superficial level, it may seem that melancholy takes over the theme of love but there is a sense of hope embedded within the overall message. Warm, comforting and ideal for bit of downtempo afterparty come downs.

Donae'o - I'm Fly

I'm Fly, so flah-ah-eye! UK Funky's main man Donae'o returns with latest single 'I'm Fly', which subscribes to the funky bassline roll typical of a party banger. There's nothing too complicated about his production or even ethos - he just knows the ingredients to a successful little stomper. I can envisage the dutty grind that will ensue on a funky dancefloor near you!

Kastle - Better Off Alone

Now for a bit of new age 2(dub)step from American B.Rich under the guise of Kastle. Interesting drum beats, psychedelic bleeps and a slightly sinister tone in the heavy synth leave an intriguing afterthought. Robotic vocals remind me of old school garage tunes where it's almost unrecognisable. It feels as though this is the narrative of a chase scene in a grimey UK gangster film, whereby the ultimate message is of solitary victory. An impressive breakdown incorporates a disco tinted synth; a cloudy atmosphere and warrior beats. Enjoy.

Swedish House Mafia feat Pharell - One (Your Name)

Firstly, the impressive official video of SHM's debut single.

A big Mafia tune; 808 sounds and melodies unleash as if tapped out by a delerious 12 year old underpinned by the sort of massive 808 sounds we all can't help but love - shaping the anthem of the summer. At its heart, it's a decent club tune with a catchy riff and some pop aesthetic, the sort of thing that will always go down well in any scene that doesn't take itself too seriously. The track also benefits from a HUGE drop that will decimate any gathering if utilised correctly. With the drum and bass mix coming courtesy of breakthrough act Netsky we have the original's riff pitched up way too high to sound good, let alone run through the entire seven minutes of the track. A pretty standard 'liquid' drum and bass straight sine bass but it does what it says on the tin and would certainly keep a party moving for a few minutes. Caspa's mix is a deceptively deep dubstep affair with a big synth build-up dropping into emphasis on the sub and nothing but kicks, carrying the tune's main riff into dark dubstep territory, all ending with a three-minute mega-crescendo. An interesting arrangement which should benefit all you DJ's out there once you get to know the tune. Definitely a good party piece and nowhere near as annoying as Netsky's shitty version.

The Qemists featuring Jenna G - Hurt Less

Jenna G offers her take on lyrics with substance: of obtaining pain through the everyday, as depicted in the official video (link below), but only to rise against it all and do your thing with style. The music, played by the trio from Brighton, is in toe with the lyrics, a blast of metalised drum and bass, heavy use of rocky drums and a live sound that isn't too far away from Pendulum's. A connotative moral victory - though not of one that you can impart on the kids! Another cool release and follow up to 'Your Revolution' from the guys at Ninja Tunes.

This below is the 'My Digital Enemy Remix' - a dancefloor housey take on a rocky original.

Kidkut - I Love 04

Who is Kidkut? Well newsicmoos came across his breakbeat sound whilst browsing one of the best compilations of the summer: Ibiza Rocks Reclaim The Dancefloor. A relatively unknown puts his knowledge of sub cultured underground music and applies it to this release; a dedication to reminiscent sounds of the breakbeat past, with a touch of sophisticated updating. The likeness to 808 State's 'Pacific' in the breakdown of this tune does no harm whatsoever. After a bit more research, it seems the label, Immerse Records, was launched by Bristolian Kidkut 4 years ago.

A bit wonky, a bit breakbeat. Enjoy.

Smooth, Nookie, Utah Jazz - Drumwise EP

With two tracks on this EP, the combined efforts of Smooth, Nookie and Utah Jazz offer a seismic release of happily epic proportions. An uplifting track which evokes reflective emotion, a subtle deployment of drops in snare then bass, and a jazzy, sunny and soulful drum and bass outlook. Ahhhh :)

Magnetic Man featuring Katy B - Perfect Stranger

Magnetic Man is causing a storm at the moment, with the teasing ways in which no full tunes aren't posted anywhere until released. On YouTube, for example, they have created cleverly edited clips that entice you enough to search vigorously for more. I predict that we will look back at 2010 and remember the ways in which Magnetic Man (Benga, Skream & Artwork) shook the very foundations of dubstep and rebuilt it in their own way. Big up & watch out for these guys! I..need...air..re-ye-yah!

So, here it is, the anthem, the classic, the vintage, the one and only.

When New York's A-Trak teamed with the producer of Dizzee's Bonkers track Armand Van Helden, what were we to expect? They claim that Duck Sauce is reinventing disco-house for a new generation, to which we prayed was to be the case. Their first single 'aNYway' subscribed to that sentiment, and whilst it hosted some funk and far out house, the most important and concurrent theme to stand out is the fun and frivolous aspect. The same applies to this tune, which after a couple of listens becomes very catchy, retains the fun and will be blasted everywhere over the coming disco summer. The only way it relates to Barbara Streisand is the random declaration of her existence within the tune. And you know, she's.. um.. fun too, right?

I predict this new Chase & Status track to be effing ginormous this summer. It took a few secluded listens, with eyes closed and reality a far distance, to be able to appreciate the production and the husky, rocky vocal from 2008 X-Factor loser Mali. Email in - newsicmoos@yahoo.co.uk and let me know what you think. Is it comparable to previous tunes? If the follow up tunes to this one keep to the same suit, then the direction has evidently changed from their More Than Alot album. There is a twinge of likeness to their remix of Nneka's 'Heartbeat'. Let's keep a close eye and see where this develops to. Good to see them back though.

Singles (Of Note) Round Up: 5th-12th July

Another jam packed week for dancedancedance. As I've already given out the Tune Of The Week accolade, it's time now to review brand spanking new releases and a few tunes re-released with various new mixes. Let's begin!

**

It's been difficult to escape this cheeky Euro-pop number that has been storming the charts and even causing a slight controversy over the original. Yes, as you may probably guess, it's none other than Yolanda Be Cool vs D Cup with 'We Speak No Americano'. A bit of cheese never hurt anyone, right? As I've personally heard this tune about a gazillion and one times (the one extra time is what pushed me over the edge!), here is the original version by Marco Calliari. A parading circus with no spectators. Possibly a hint Marco? Other than this tune, the Australian duo have gained support from the likes of Mylo and Fake Blood for their afro-funk, summer grooves.

This next track is a noteable release from Wiley, though not one of his strongest of recent. Still, it packs a punch and has a title that rolls of the tongue. After researching the term 'Electric Boogaloo' a little further, it seems that Wiley could be referring to a 1984 film that depicted urban dancers using their combined skills and presence to stop a corporation from tearing down a recreation centre. Just a thought. A nice dancefloor pleaser, nonetheless. This below is the stompin' Hudson Mohawke remix.

Kelis has returned after shaving off her massive hair that may have just held the power to her attitude-based face. Her latest album Flesh Tone is a personal recollection of her life post-motherdom and dictates a dance-orientated outlook, a noticeable shift. The change from RnB diva to a lady of dancing leisure could be pinned down to none other than David Guetta for his hand in production; though nothing should be taken from the brave and bold Kelis for her exhilirating input. Her latest single, '4th Of July (Fireworks)', is self-assured, full of layered piano hooks and discarded structure. Quite simply, unique. This below is Calvin Harris's dirty disco-electro-funk take on this beaut. Enjoy!
