Event Review: 'Thrasher' @ The Warehouse Project

What appropriate timing to make an entrance to The Warehouse Project, a definitive moment of the night for many I’m sure, that of Joy Orbison’s 'Shrew That Cushioned The Blow' mixed wonderfully into ‘Hyph Mngo’. Nice. And no better does it sound than in this moment right now, surrounded by mash-faced revellers and stunning lasers that silhouette arms twist shapes for.

As the night’s progressing, the young crowd respond to Katy B in her newfound modern icon status, with 'Perfect Stranger' proving to be the best of the night so far. Flying Lotus supplied us with edgy, experimental hip-hop sounds that only the die-hard fan missed the bar to see. And Magnetic Man prove their supergroup status, and true to their name the people swarm and squash to see this forward thinking, 21st century boy band. Or is that man band?

A few random video selections that can't really highlight the superiority of this night but can let you in to the brilliant production of a Warehouse Project show. Enjoy!

Night Review: Friday, 1st October 2010 // dnb vs ukg vs the future sound of the uk @ The Contact Theatre

Manchester is abuzz with events this weekend, made all the more noticeable by the squeals of freshers and the queues that had dissapeared throughout this summer, and every summer before. The Contact Theatre greets me with its gothic, castle-like appearance, though the music blasting from the next venue detracts any elegance or poise, its Euro-pop-dance tinged bass and lyrics that drift poisonously to my psyche, 'Now you're gone...'. It is none other than Basshunter, throwing shapes using only his crotch area to screaming adolescent girls - exactly what I don't look for in a decent night and if anything is making me appreciate the kind of music I will be hearing tonight.

"I.D. please?"

I look old enough to have spawned a few sprogs, so it's a shock to my system that I almost don't get in. Nothing more can go wrong, I think, right? Wrong. Branded on the entrance door is a landscape A4 piece of paper highlighting very poo news: DUE TO UNFORSEEN REASONS, ZED BIAS WILL NOT ATTEND TONIGHT'S GIG. In my opinion, the headline act, the whole draw of the night was not going to appear. Bummer.

As in my usual laid back style, nothing is going to deter me from having a good night. This is a celebratory night afterall, in the essence of Black History Month.

As I'm here early, the near empty makeshift dancefloor area is a slight cause for concern for two reasons; I've told friends this will be a good night and; that maybe the event isn't going to get a deserved reception, especially because of its cause. More people are scattered in the smoking and bar area whilst the speaker system is booming the bass-heavy grime as promised.

The music that is playing has no real flow from one tune to the next and Mancunian MC DRS is splurting various lyrical concoctions over the crowd-pleasing tunes. Eventually, more people spill in as the music encompasses the celebratory nature of the event, and the intimate crowd can't help but shake their shit to a dutty wind. The tunes are crowd-pleasers taken from funky, garage, drum and bass, dubstep, hip-hop and grime in a soundclash of musical ideas and history. Examples of said popular and broad-ranging tunes include 'Hold You' by Gyptian, Magnetic Man with 'I Need Air' and 'Feelings' by Shy FX. I'm slightly put off the sound of Sean Paul, being used a tad too much, but all pleasing to the general atmosphere.

It is a night that needs commending because of the cause - a celebration of black history, made all the more poignant by the knowledge of paying customers in the Basshunter-pit of a venue next door.

Unfortunate that Zed Bias didn't show but Marcus Intalex and Fallacy sure made up for it. Great night. Great vibe. Great sound.

Event: Magnetic Man AND Deadmau5 in one night @ Manchester Central.

Magnetic Man....and Deadmau5, I hear you ponder. Yes, this is the case. The actual case. On the 10th of December, the Dubstep supergroup and the electro legend combine their musical know-how to provide a night of varying tastes. All part of their Arena Tour, so if you're in Coventry, Glasgow or London, you're the chosen ones! But for you Mancunians, Manchester Central is the location!

Event: Moodymann is coming to Manchester @ Roadhouse!

The Roadhouse is celebrating the 2nd year of existence for popular night 'Cut Loose' in dog dayum style! Moodymann returns to Manchester on Friday 17th September in what is destined to be nothing short of cool as f**k. Tickets are £12.50 and can be bought on the website links.

Event: Moodymann coming to Manchester!

Listen up party people... the one and only soulful house master is coming to town. Mark the date in your raving diary forward slash chillout; September 17th he descends upon The Roadhouse for Cutloose. Check it out!

Of course, such wild excitement and persuasive agenda must show some relevant backing. His music evokes an emotive spectrum, with slick instrumentation binding together the breaks, like an edible, adhesive honey. Examples follow.

This is Moodymann's music lecture as part of The Red Bull Music Academy's London take over 2010. There are expletives in the following video, so for all of you that don't want to hear it: be warned.



And this below is an example of one of his most popular tunes. It transcends the realm of simplistic house music by forming a jazz-enthused, instrumental dream with a vocal that floats soulfully with the tunes ambience.

Culture: Factory Records city walk.

Fancy taking a stroll down Raver's End? Take a little mosey on down to Madchester Beginnings? Well, now, you kind of can. Urbis has put together a Factory Records city walk to commemorate and celebrate the significant influence that era had on the world's clubbing scene and how it set the standards for a hedonistic future. The walk will stop off at the Free Trade Hall, the site of the original Hacienda nightclub, MICC (formerly G-Mex) and Factory HQ. Most club-enthusiasts or home-bred Mancunians will already know the story and could possibly have visited when the tour took place in March this year before a screening of 24 Hour Party People at The Cornerhouse, but it's a fitting gift to a time Manchester is oh so proud of.

It begins on 19/6/2010 (tomorrow) and continues for a fair few weeks. Enough time to dedicate some time. More info here.

Club: Not so Skank-eys.

Manchester's pride and joy, an establishment that has plans to spread its Mancunian love across the globe, Sankeys is bigger than ever. I ventured to the club in the midst of historical warehouses for the first time in over 3 years and I was pleased with the overall night, the new layout, the exotic terrace and great sound system.

What you up to in a couple of weeks when the 2nd May bank holiday alleviates us from a day of work, enabling an extra day of hedonism?

Parlez vous Real Tone?

French label Real Tone supply the global dance arena with smooth minimalistic ideas and one means by which they spread their sound is through globetrotting DJ Franck Roger. This week (17th May) he releases a 5 track EP entitled 'Same Old Game', where we're forced to submerge ourselves in the tribal depth of South American vibes. This kind of deep house is the perfect accompaniment to a dance floor. And if you're in Manchester, then there's no need to dream - check out The Roadhouse on the 4th June.
