Remix: Magnetic Man - I Need Air (Digital Soundboy Remix)

Just as a little homage to massive tune that did itself justice in the dance world this week. Magnetic Man. I salute thee.

Tune Alert: Pitto - Sea Lion Woman

This tune struck me down as soon as I heard it and the cause of such dramatic engagement is down to the original 'Seeline Woman' by the inimitable Nina Simone. The hypnotic mantra-like vocals of this bootlegged version are blatantly inspired by the original, while the minimal house mixed with a happy-clapping beat provides one the most exciting house tracks this summer. How apt that it should be Mr Tong's Essential Tune earlier on in July. No surprises there for me. This is Pitto's bootleg of a Feist's take on Nina Simone and should come with a warning label: must be heard on big speakers.

Tune: Aeroplane - We Can't Fly

The Belgian disco duo are setting an entirely new standard to summer tunes of frivolity, with this first single from their debut album We Can't Fly set to be released in September. This song shows that Aeroplane actually can fly and help us do the same through their cosmic nu-disco synth waves and squelching bass riffs, that could arguably be compared to any other electronic chill out tune. However, it's obvious that Aeroplane don't make just any other dance song. 'We Can't Fly' is spicy and flavoursome, with reggae percussion, gospel-like vocals and beachy riffs. Not to forget the piano. This single has the potential to cheer up any dwellers of the English summer by taking you on a round trip to the Caribbean; a seriously feel good summer vibe.

Enjoy.

This is a preview posted by the label on YouTube.

Remix: Morcheeba - Even Though

Skye Edwards has reunited with the remaining two thirds of Morcheeba (Paul and Ross Godfrey), recapturing the essence of the original formation. 'Even Though' is the first single of their 7th album Blood Like Lemonade; it's fresh, chilled and cemented by Skye's raw vocals. The lyrics are touching, simply intimate without a feeling of being in too deep; first delving under your skin, then comforting.

Posted below and more fitting to the newsicmoos way of life is Surfing Leon's Afternoon Mix, which guards the very core of the original; its intimacy and warmth is attractive and merges with subtle hints of rolling electro. It begins eerily; the original sounds as if someone is breathing through an astronaut's helmet (Skye makes reference to space in the first verse), though the remix seems to have replaced this with an ominous sound of whistling wind. Surfing Leon mixes fast and choppy electro beats, not losing the laid back feeling through alternating slow piano chords. Perfect for what Ross Godfrey referred to as a "3am ...spliffed-out" moment. A pretty typical Morcheeba release and we're more than happy about it.

Album: Cajmere - It's Time

A slice of 90's house for you little blighters now. Cajmere, of 'Brighter Days' success, releases an album full of Chicago house lovin' stompers that pinpoint a certain nostalgic sound and are perfect for a big room dance floor. There's the blaring carnival horns of 'Horny 94', the funk soul sound of 'Say U Will 05' and the underground reworking of 'Brighter Days' that all make for a great attribute to your collection. Complete and utter house madness.

EP: LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change (Tiga Remix)

Tiga has never been one to pigeonhole himself when it come to styles and genres, however, the Canadian has lain before him a signature sound on remixes of acts such as Prodigy, Pet Shop Boys and Felix Da Housecat, to name but a prolific few. His latest remix is of the 80's synth-pop-tinged 'I Can Change' by LCD Soundsystem. The original symbolises an early 80's sound and the remix doesn't stray too far from this retro style. It starts with regimental sounding hi hats over James Murphy's wonderful vocal as the sub bass bubbles up beneath. Slowly but surely the track progresses with a huge menacing bassline that creeps in until it dominates the track. When listening to the breakdown, I cant help but imagine it being played in a packed festival tent with its glorious euphoric synth building a definitive hands-in-the-air moment. If you haven't already heard it, expect to hear it in a festival tent near you.
Enjoy.

Tune Alert: B-Complex - Beautiful Lies VIP

Bratislavan producer B-complex, aka Mato Lenicky, finally releases the already popular ‘Beautiful Lies VIP’ on Hospital Records. It’s cleaner and retains the feel of the original but with added vigour and intensity through new melodies and beats. Mato`s approach to the genre is very unique, tending to steer his own direction, favouring sophisticated melodies and intricate harmonies mashed with the pace and energy of drum and bass - this release is no contradiction to that. Impressive gothic vocals make this track memorable, and it’s inclusion on Hospital compilations means it could sound a bit dated with a release so late, but with backing from High Contrast this track should cement B-Complex firmly on the scene. Newsicmoos recommends you check him out in his tour.

Remix: T Coy - Carino

When the original mix of this tune was released in the 1980's it pretty much defined UK house, so you can't blame Soul M for not going all out Aphex on this one and sticking pretty close to the sound of the original. With a beefed up mixdown and some much needed added progression, this is the sort of remix that manages to bring a vintage music moment back to relevance. He's also sorted out the tick track that was way too loud in the original 80's mix and everything's just better tuned to the sort of soundsystems we enjoy here in the then future. There's not much you can really say critically about this track without getting too far into the sort of remix politics that bore us all to death but for what it's worth, this is definitely worth picking up, especially if you loved the original and want to start playing it out again.

Singles (Of Note) Round Up: 26th - 1st August 2010

It's time for the weekly round up of noteable tune releases. Quite a big week - we got house, uk funky, drum and bass and a bit of soul. Plus, newsicmoos has some new writers on board so keep an eye out for them! And may this atrocity never ever happen again.

So the festival season is underway, if you have any crazy stories or general chit chat get in touch! newsicmoos@yahoo.co.uk. Follow us on Twitter! Check out Zed Bias and his latest soulful delivery as the Tune Of The Week. That's enough plugging this week.

Chris Lake & Nelski - Minimal Life

Chris Lake is no stranger to big room electro stompers, but for his latest release 'Minimal Feelings' he delves in to the murky world of minimal. Alongside the 'Rising Music' head honcho is Nelski who until late 2008 was one part of Rhythm Code, a production duo that released tech house gems on Size, Cubism, Rising Music and Noir. Together the pair have created a dance floor destroyer, peppered with acid squelch, bleeps, bloops and hover sounds. These sounds constantly change and crisscross around the track to give it a classic minimal feel. Lake's big room electro past can be heard as the track slowly builds to a huge drop and slams you back in to nothing but beats, bass and bleeps. This track isn't for the experienced minimalist but rather a perfect crossover for all those electro heads that have never ventured into the world of minimal. Now, they may look no further.

Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill

'On Melancholy Hill' is the second release from album Plastic Beach, following 'Stylo', the pop-enthused tune that introduced the newly progressed sound of the musical project since the over-hyped Demon Days. Damon Albarn's geniality is proved in this beautifully romantic and dreamy pop song, and quite the opposite to the title, it evokes a sense of serenity and solace. A balance is found in the up-beat riff and chilled out lyrics, creating a comforting love song. Lyrics allude to the question of love and that connection with a loved on. On a superficial level, it may seem that melancholy takes over the theme of love but there is a sense of hope embedded within the overall message. Warm, comforting and ideal for bit of downtempo afterparty come downs.

Donae'o - I'm Fly

I'm Fly, so flah-ah-eye! UK Funky's main man Donae'o returns with latest single 'I'm Fly', which subscribes to the funky bassline roll typical of a party banger. Kastle - Better Off Alone

Now for a bit of new age 2(dub)step from American B.Rich under the guise of Kastle. Interesting drum beats, psychedelic bleeps and a slightly sinister tone in the heavy synth leave an intriguing afterthought. Robotic vocals remind me of old school garage tunes where it's almost unrecognisable. It feels as though this is the narrative of a chase scene in a grimey UK gangster film, whereby the ultimate message is of solitary victory. An impressive breakdown incorporates a disco tinted synth; a cloudy atmosphere and warrior beats. Enjoy.

Swedish House Mafia feat Pharell - One (Your Name)

Firstly, the impressive official video of SHM's debut single.

A big Mafia tune; 808 sounds and melodies unleash as if tapped out by a delerious 12 year old underpinned by the sort of massive 808 sounds we all can't help but love - shaping the anthem of the summer. At its heart, it's a decent club tune with a catchy riff and some pop aesthetic, the sort of thing that will always go down well in any scene that doesn't take itself too seriously. The track also benefits from a HUGE drop that will decimate any gathering if utilised correctly. With the drum and bass mix coming courtesy of breakthrough act Netsky we have the original's riff pitched up way too high to sound good, let alone run through the entire seven minutes of the track. A pretty standard 'liquid' drum and bass straight sine bass but it does what it says on the tin and would certainly keep a party moving for a few minutes. Caspa's mix is a deceptively deep dubstep affair with a big synth build-up dropping into emphasis on the sub and nothing but kicks, carrying the tune's main riff into dark dubstep territory, all ending with a three-minute mega-crescendo. An interesting arrangement which should benefit all you DJ's out there once you get to know the tune. Definitely a good party piece and nowhere near as annoying as Netsky's shitty version.

Tune Of The Week: Zed Bias feat Jenna G - Show Some Appreciation

Dave Jones, aka Zed Bias, has been instrumental in the forthcoming of dubstep, as well as pioneering a progressive 2-step garage sound. Along with Jenna G, this latest single release gives us a little teaser of what to expect on his newest album to be released some time later in the year under his alter ego Maddslinky. Much like previous release 'Sound Of Love', there's a soulful element to his simplistic house in the undertones balanced out by the use of deep synth separating beats. This is newsicmoos stand out track of the week. And below is a Maddslinky remix, a bit more upbeat and ready for the dancefloor.

Tune Of The Week: Zinc feat Jamie George - Love To Feel This Way

Zinc has released volume 2 of his Crack House legacy this week, and what a stomper it is. 'Crack' house is a newly coined genre by Zinc - one which agitates giddyness and detaches limbs from body in reflex to project all sorts of impossible and made up shapes. This latest offering makes you do just that. Lose ya limbs! Track 1 is popular: 'Nexx' demostrates the perfectly infectious nature of crack house where Zinc knows how to make a drop count. Not too dissimilar from 'Blunt Edge', but cool stuff. And track 2, 'Let's Go', featuring JME has catchy vocals that slot in nicely alongside the dirty whompwhomp of a stompstomp. Overall Zinc, a pretty decent summer release. Stand out track though is newsicmoos TUNE OF THE WEEK! - 'Love To Feel This Way' featuring vocals from Jamie George (of Roska's 'Wonderful Day'). This tune has a sinister undertone with an opposing uplifting vibe that can't help but slap a smile across your cracked up face.

The Qemists featuring Jenna G - Hurt Less

Jenna G offers her take on lyrics with substance: of obtaining pain through the everyday, as depicted in the official video (link below), but only to rise against it all and do your thing with style. The music, played by the trio from Brighton, is in toe with the lyrics, a blast of metalised drum and bass, heavy use of rocky drums and a live sound that isn't too far away from Pendulum's. A connotative moral victory - though not of one that you can impart on the kids! Another cool release and follow up to 'Your Revolution' from the guys at Ninja Tunes.

Kidkut - I Love 04

Who is Kidkut? Well newsicmoos came across his breakbeat sound whilst browsing one of the best compilations of the summer: Ibiza Rocks Reclaim The Dancefloor. A relatively unknown puts his knowledge of sub cultured underground music and applies it to this release; a dedication to reminiscent sounds of the breakbeat past, with a touch of sophisticated updating. The likeness to 808 State's 'Pacific' in the breakdown of this tune does no harm whatsoever. After a bit more research, it seems the label, Immerse Records, was launched by Bristolian Kidkut 4 years ago.

A bit wonky, a bit breakbeat. Enjoy.

Magnetic Man featuring Katy B - Perfect Stranger

Magnetic Man is causing a storm at the moment, with the teasing ways in which no full tunes aren't posted anywhere until released. On YouTube, for example, they have created cleverly edited clips that entice you enough to search vigorously for more. I predict that we will look back at 2010 and remember the ways in which Magnetic Man (Benga, Skream & Artwork) shook the very foundations of dubstep and rebuilt it in their own way. Big up & watch out for these guys! I..need...air..re-ye-yah!

Remix: Breakbot feat Irfane - Baby I'm Yours

The original to this track was released back in February, but in homage to that is a new release of remixers this week. Breakbot follows in the footsteps of Justice and sounds much like the disco-electro sounds of Daft Punk. The big remix is from Aeroplane, who seem to be remixing every new artist at the moment, not that I'm complaining. An extract from the Moshi Moshi website:

"Emerging electro wunderkid Breakbot crafts party tunes. Big ones.
Following in the footsteps of French electro duo Justice, Parisian
Thibaut Berland aka Breakbot has mastered the art of melting together
all the best elements of dance, electro and hip hop with skill and
precision. And a laptop.

Born in 1981, Thibaut was immersed in the sights and sounds of the
subsequent decade, and remained appropriately pulled between his love
of animation graphics/comics, and music. He chose neither one clear
path, nor another. Possessing a degree in computer graphics, and
having created his first animation short film co-directed with two
friends, Thibaut now makes music videos, commercials and such. By day.
By night however, he cooks up choice cut electronic music,
experimenting with beats, layers, keyboards, vocals, and Daft
Punk-esque get-yo-funk-on basslines
."

Alex Phountzi, formerly of Bugz In Da Attic, and Leo Greenslade, of West London clubnight yOyO, conjoin their musical pasts and form a fresh take on grime, adding a funky bassline and the attitude of bashment.

This is track one from the EP entitled 'Suh Mi Stay', and features Serocee.

When New York's A-Trak teamed with the producer of Dizzee's Bonkers track Armand Van Helden, what were we to expect? They claim that Duck Sauce is reinventing disco-house for a new generation, to which we prayed was to be the case. Their first single 'aNYway' subscribed to that sentiment, and whilst it hosted some funk and far out house, the most important and concurrent theme to stand out is the fun and frivolous aspect. The same applies to this tune, which after a couple of listens becomes very catchy, retains the fun and will be blasted everywhere over the coming disco summer. The only way it relates to Barbara Streisand is the random declaration of her existence within the tune. And you know, she's.. um.. fun too, right?

I predict this new Chase & Status track to be effing ginormous this summer. It took a few secluded listens, with eyes closed and reality a far distance, to be able to appreciate the production and the husky, rocky vocal from 2008 X-Factor loser Mali. Email in - newsicmoos@yahoo.co.uk and let me know what you think. Is it comparable to previous tunes? If the follow up tunes to this one keep to the same suit, then the direction has evidently changed from their More Than Alot album. Another jam packed week for dancedancedance. As I've already given out the Tune Of The Week accolade, it's time now to review brand spanking new releases and a few tunes re-released with various new mixes. Let's begin!

**

It's been difficult to escape this cheeky Euro-pop number that has been storming the charts and even causing a slight controversy over the original. Yes, as you may probably guess, it's none other than Yolanda Be Cool vs D Cup with 'We Speak No Americano'. A bit of cheese never hurt anyone, right? As I've personally heard this tune about a gazillion and one times (the one extra time is what pushed me over the edge!), here is the original version by Marco Calliari. A parading circus with no spectators. Possibly a hint Marco? Other than this tune, the Australian duo have gained support from the likes of Mylo and Fake Blood for their afro-funk, summer grooves.

This next track is a noteable release from Wiley, though not one of his strongest of recent. Still, it packs a punch and has a title that rolls of the tongue. After researching the term 'Electric Boogaloo' a little further, it seems that Wiley could be referring to a 1984 film that depicted urban dancers using their combined skills and presence to stop a corporation from tearing down a recreation centre. Just a thought. A nice dancefloor pleaser, nonetheless. This below is the stompin' Hudson Mohawke remix.

Kelis has returned after shaving off her massive hair that may have just held the power to her attitude-based face. Her latest album Flesh Tone is a personal recollection of her life post-motherdom and dictates a dance-orientated outlook, a noticeable shift. The change from RnB diva to a lady of dancing leisure could be pinned down to none other than David Guetta for his hand in production; though nothing should be taken from the brave and bold Kelis for her exhilirating input. Her latest single, '4th Of July (Fireworks)', is self-assured, full of layered piano hooks and discarded structure. Quite simply, unique. This below is Calvin Harris's dirty disco-electro-funk take on this beaut. Enjoy!

EP: BIG TUNE: Sbtrkt n Sampha - Break Off EP

A broken beat, some grimey funky dubstep, uniquely soft breakdowns and a soulful vocal equals a perfect release. Sbtrkt fails to dissapoint and Sampha delivers some emotive beats. BIG TUNE!

Compilation: Hospitality Drum & Bass 2010

Hospitality hit us with that drum and bass ting in the way they know how. Big tunes and big names including Camo & Krooked, Netsky, The Qemists, Nu:Tone, High Contrast and Logistics. One of the best remixes of the year is presented by Danny Byrd & Liquid giving us some of that 'Sweet Harmony'.

Enjoy.

New Album: Kabuki - Warrior Soul

Deep undertones, sophisticated mass appeal and a shift in his usual style, Kabuki returns after 6 long years with an album that's definitely worth the wait. Also known as Jan Hennig, the German producer offers a diverse LP with multiple layers and textures - an album for the car, house party of even chillin' out before a grand night on the rocks. Below is 'Just Hold On' featuring drum and bass vocal legend Jenna G, who lends her hand with a sprawling vocal that intensifies the track. The newsicmoos stand out tune is 'Rhodesia', which offers a catchy, soulful and playful production. An updated and successful attempt at liquid funk dnb, a type of dnb that has been missing from the scene of late. One to buy!

Enjoy.

Tune Of The Week: James Blake - CMYK EP

James Blake released his EP a month ago with a sound so astral, atmospheric and sometimes a little bit grimy. There's no doubt as to why he's fronting remixes for prolific electronic music gods; he has a way of breaking apart a flow but keeping in tact an elevating manner. I'm sure there's more to come from Blakey yet!

Remix: Gramophonedzie - Why Don't You (Greenmoney Remix)

I was browsing the compilation Bass In Yer Face just now and came across this lil' beaut. A flick of a cheeky heel and swingingly slick hair, the perky and original Gramophonedzie release is hyped up, funked up and rolled up. Schmoke it people.

Enjoy.

The album collects the work of Zero 7, spanning their earliest albumSimple Things to latest releaseYeah Ghost. The most attractive aspect of this release is the host of remixes, except the wotsit coloured 'Destiny' mixes! A couple that newsicmoos reccomends.
